]]>Fear of sickness and death is part of the human condition. Nowhere in our times has this fear been more manifest than with HIV/AIDS.
The Cured? project is a photo essay exploring the real life story of Luis Paul Canales, a young dancer in San Francisco. In 2013 Luis was diagnosed with HIV. After going on HIV meds, Luis made a long planned move to Iceland, returning a year later to San Francisco. Upon his return, Luis' doctors could find no sign of HIV in his body. They checked his original blood samples and confirmed the original diagnosis. Apparently Luis had started meds soon after being infected, and his body had managed to clear the virus. Luis then began working with top HIV/AIDS researchers in San Francisco, searching for possible hidden reservoirs of virus. After over a dozen procedures, no virus has yet been found. This "miracle" has been difficult and confusing for Luis. This story is told both with "documentary style" photos of Luis' real life, as well as with metaphorical studio shots told with dance. In the near future, these photos will be combined with Luis' blog posts as a book.
