Felix d'Eon

Before I started photography I did drawing and painting with San Francisco artist Felix d'Eon. I took a weekly figure drawing class with Felix in his studio. I started photography as I often couldn't finish my drawings while the live model was posing. Soon I was taking photos for Felix to use in his own art, and collaborating on projects together. Here is one of Felix' drawings. I remember it well, as I posed the Model (Rob) to re-enact the moment that I knew I was gay. That moment was in 6th grade and I was taking swimming lessons at the high school. The lessons were taught by the varsity swim team. I remember one of our coaches walking out of the showers with a towel around his neck. I had never seen anything so beautiful before, and knew at that moment what it was to be gay. Yay!

The model for this photo is Randall Wade. The actual scene is Ocean Beach in San Francisco, but the book takes place on the East Coast.

I was thrilled that a photo from my Truvada Whore series as a finalist for Next Magazine's photo competition featuring gay life in 2015. Here is the text from Next Magazine's description of the contest:

Each year, Next puts out the call for photographers around the world to submit images that represent the rich tapestry of contemporary gay life for our annual photo contest. This year’s submissions included a wide variety of photos, from the candid to the meticulously styled, from the campy to the profound. These nine finalists represent the best of the best selected by our editors in cooperation with the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art.

I had an awesome photo shoot with gay pornstar/escort Sean Xavier. This is my second shoot with Sean, and he is delightful. He destroys all stereotypes of gay sex workers, as he is articulate, educated, and outgoing. His porn/escort career will be coming to an end at the end of Summer 2015 so that he can focus solely on his PHD in Man/Machine Interfaces.

This will be our first workshop outdoors at the clothing optional section of Marshall Beach in San Francisco. It has incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands.

I met Haze at final performance of the San Francisco Drag Show Cocktailgate. He was the "Bucket Boy" who was going through the crowd to gather tips. In exchange, he removed articles of clothing on stage. I approached him about doing a photo shoot, and was thrilled when he agreed. He arrived at my studio with numerous cigarette burns from a performance art piece the previous evening (ouch), but was otherwise stunning. I loved the images that we created together and look forward to shooting him again.

Workshops on Photography of the Male Nude

I am interested in creating a community of photographers/artists interested in the male figure in the SF Bay Area. As part of this effort, I have been leading several Workshops on Photography of the Male Nude. Each workshop often has a focus on some aspect of photography, including some experimental techniques. The last workshop had the floor covered several inches in flour, creating incredible patterns of "cloud" in the photos. As you can see our workshops have terrific models, including many professional dancers.

Greatest Influences: Pierre et Gilles

I am a huge fan of the artists Pierre et Gilles. They are a long time couple with one doing the photography and one adding layers of fantasy paint above. I love how their art is a mix of kitsch humor, homo sexiness, and classic beauty. I often wonder how it is to work as a collaboration with another artist, as I have only my own skills and viewpoints to rely on. My own series of Sons of God that dealt with my Catholic upbringing through a gay lens, was a direct tribute to the stylings of Pierre et Gilles.

Stolen Photos?

The scourge of every photography is when your work is stolen, and used without your permission. I came upon the photo below on Tumblr today in a posting on the best artistic photos with an erection. I have no idea how they got this photo as I don't think that I have ever shared it. I am a little flattered that they chose it, and that it is getting hundreds of likes. However, it is unfortunate that there is no credit given to me (or the models), and no easy way for me to have the photo removed.

The artistic erection in this photo belongs to the incredible Michael Brandon. He is posing together with our mutual friend Puppy.
